Both family courts are in the same courthouse at the Prince William County Judicial Center:

Prince William Circuit Court (31st Judicial Circuit)

Clerk's Office: (703) 792-6015

Hears divorce cases, including property division, spousal support, and custody and support that are part of a divorce.

Prince William Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (J&DR)

9311 Lee Avenue, First Floor, Manassas, VA 20110

Clerk's Office: (703) 792-6160

Hears custody, visitation, and support petitions when no divorce is pending, plus family abuse protective orders.

What to know about family cases in Prince William

  1. 1. Manassas and Manassas Park use the same courts. The Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park are independent cities, separate from the county. For family cases, though, both are served by the Prince William Circuit Court and the Prince William J&DR Court on Lee Avenue. A Manassas Park address doesn't send you to a different courthouse.
  1. 2. Your first filing may not be a divorce. If you're separated with children and not ready to file for divorce, or you never married, a custody and support petition in J&DR is often the first step. If a divorce is filed later and custody or support is set for a hearing in circuit court within 21 days, the circuit court generally takes those issues over (Va. Code § 16.1-244).
  1. 3. Military families: residency and timing need care. Many families here have ties to Marine Corps Base Quantico, the Pentagon, or other installations. Virginia's divorce residency statute has specific provisions for service members (Va. Code § 20-97). Federal law can also affect timing and property. For example, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act may let an active-duty spouse ask to pause a case, and dividing military retired pay follows federal rules as well as Virginia's. Part of the Quantico base also lies outside Prince William County, so where you live can change which court hears your case. I'll help you sort out those questions early. See Serving in the Armed Forces and the Intersection with Family Law and VA Benefits and Divorce in Virginia.
  1. 4. Moves and "home state." Families who move often should know that a Virginia court can usually make a first custody order only if Virginia is the child's home state. That generally means the child lived here for the six months before the case was filed, with some exceptions (Va. Code § 20-146.12). If you've recently arrived or a move is coming, timing matters.
  1. 5. Parent education, and often mediation. In contested custody, visitation, or support cases, each parent must show they've attended an approved parent education seminar of at least four hours, ideally before mediation (Va. Code § 16.1-278.15). Virginia law also favors mediation where appropriate (Va. Code § 20-124.2), and the Prince William J&DR Court provides information on mediation for families.

Frequently asked questions

I live in Manassas. Is my case filed in a city court?

No separate city family court is involved. Divorce cases for Manassas and Manassas Park residents go to the Prince William Circuit Court, and custody and support petitions go to the Prince William J&DR Court, both at 9311 Lee Avenue.

My spouse is on active duty. Can we still get divorced in Virginia?

Often, yes. Virginia's residency rules have specific provisions for service members, but deployment, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, and military retirement rules can all affect how and when a case moves. It's worth getting advice before anyone files.

Can I get a child support order without filing for divorce?

Yes. A parent can file a support petition in the Prince William J&DR Court whether or not the parents were married, and support is generally calculated under Virginia's guideline (Va. Code § 20-108.2).
